Paige Green Dunn
Co-Founder and President of MOMentum
Dear MOMentum Supporters,
I’m proud to say we have installed equipment in three parks: Les Gove in Auburn, Marymoor Park in Redmond, and Bitter Lake Reservoir Park in North Seattle. I’m excited to announce the fourth will be Bellevue Park this fall. These park installations only happen through donations, and I need your help! I hope you will consider donating. Every penny counts, and no donation is too small—or too big. 🙂 MOMentum partners with the Seattle Parks Foundation, our fiscal sponsor, which gives us 501(c)(3) status.
I’m thrilled to announce that MOMentum is participating in The Seattle Foundation’s GiveBIG matching program this year. GiveBIG is a one-day, online charitable giving event, inspiring people to give generously to the nonprofit organizations that make our region a healthier and more vital place to live. Please click the link below to help support MOMentum. I appreciate you and your generosity! Each donation (up to $5,000 per donor, per organization) made to one of the 1,600 nonprofit organizations profiled on The Seattle Foundation’s website between midnight and midnight Pacific Time on Tuesday, May 6, 2014, will receive a prorated portion of The Seattle Foundation’s matching funds, or “stretch pool.” The amount of the “stretch” depends on how much is raised in total donations on GiveBIG day. As long as you have access to the web and a credit card, you can participate!
Credit card donations made on www.seattlefoundation.org on May 6 are eligible. Donations made by credit card (Visa, Mastercard, and Discover) via Click & Pledge (our online donations provider) through The Seattle Foundation’s website will qualify for the stretch pool. Because they cannot be tracked through our website, donations in other forms will not count toward the totals for the stretch dollars.

I so appreciate your support.
Thank you to our partners (Seattle Parks Foundation, Trust for Public Land, and the Seattle Parks Department), generous donors, volunteers, and community supporters for helping the Bitter Lake neighborhood get an outdoor gym!
People around the world are using outdoor gyms in their neighborhood to stay healthy. Read about these sites that have been, or will be installed this year around the world.

We were recently awarded a $1,000 Play Possible grant for our next outdoor gym at Bitter Lake Reservoir Park from Kompan. A sincere and hearty thank you, Kompan, for all of your support.
We’re almost there! We have under $5,000 left to raise before MOMentum is a reality for Bitter Lake residents. Will you help? Please donate today.
Thank you, KOMO, for featuring MOMentum and our upcoming site, Bitter Lake Reservoir Park.

Ever since Amanda was a little girl, she knew she wanted to serve women. In her teens as a missionary kid in Romania, she began assisting with births acting as a doula for local moms. This transformative experience led her to study in the United States to become a certified nurse practitioner and midwife. After finishing a Master’s Degree, she and her husband moved to Seattle where she recently opened a private practice focused solely on offering a holistic approach to women’s healthcare.
Amanda encourages every woman to find a healthcare provider who values and honors a woman’s story. “A woman’s story is so important, it helps us dive deep and find the root cause of many health problems as well as the right way to heal”, says Amanda. “Your relationship with your provider should feel like a partnership and they need to spend time listening and helping you reflect on your story.”
Amanda heard about the MOMentum site opening at Bitter Lake Reservoir Park and immediately wanted to get involved. Many of her patients suffer from anxiety and multiple forms of depression, many of which can be treated, in part, by social interaction and exercise. Amanda said that “exercise is a part of healing that I don’t specialize in, so I wanted to support a way to support it in my community.” Amanda also believes that all women deserve equal resources to be healthy and the best kind of care. “MOMentum offers high-quality fitness equipment in a safe environment for women who would not have the opportunity to exercise otherwise. MOMentum gives women a way to honor themselves and their families.”
Amanda is accepting new patients in her North Seattle office on Wednesdays and Saturdays and will soon be seeing patients on Fridays in West Seattle. Please visit her website, Facebook page, or email her to learn more and make an appointment.
Thank you, Amanda!
Did you know that America’s Health Centers serve over 22 million people in low-income and medically underserved communities? MOMentum recently attended Healthpoint’s celebration of National Health Center Week at their Kent clinic, just down the road from our Auburn MOMentum Outdoor Gym. We are impressed with the progress that Healthpoint is making to create more healthful communities and provide necessary resources for those who need it most.
Pictured below are Healthpoint CEO, Thomas Trompeter, and MOMentum co-founder, Kelly Singer and Thomas Trompeter, Congressman Adam Smith, and State Representative Tina Orwal.
Today the Momentum Team presented the Bitter Lake Reservoir Park project to the Rotary Club of Seattle Northeast. We had a great time meeting the members and sharing our vision of bringing fitness equipment to public parks. Paige and John are shown with club member, Joel Calvert.
Our next facility at Bitter Lake Reservoir Park will feature the following pieces of Kompan exercise equipment. You can try some of these machines in action at our other MOMentum sites at Les Gove Park in Auburn and Marymoor Park in Redmond.
We hope you have a wonderful and active holiday weekend!
We’d like to send out a giant THANK YOU to our recent sponsor, Central Market, who just donated $1,000 to the outdoor gym at Bitter Lake Reservoir Park.
We stopped by Central Market in Shoreline a few months ago to meet with the store manager, Joel, and were greeting with smiles and hellos from all the team members. Joel was so helpful and took the time to listen to our presentation and ask insightful questions about the work MOMentum is doing. This is more than a grocery store, it’s a community gathering place that offers support and inspiration for healthy living for residents in north Seattle. Here are just a few reasons why we love Central Market:
- The produce section is one of the best in Seattle.
- The bulk foods area is huge – a great place to stock up on hard-to-find legumes, spices, and nuts.
- At the time of this post, my favorite coconut water was on super sale (Taste Nirvana).
- It’s an adventure for your kids – my son loves watching the lobster tank, sampling apples and fresh tortillas, and interacting with the friendly checkers.
- Delicious and fresh foods available for on-the-go snacks from the deli and prepared foods counter.
- Did I mention that the manager, Joel, rocks?
- An amazing Asian food section — anything you need, you can find there.
- Awesome meat and seafood departments…and don’t miss talking to the guys and gals there – they are friendly, funny and so willing to help you make a selection!
- Helpful and creative cooking demos and recipes.
- Nice selection of quality health and natural beauty products
- Fresh tortillas – need I say more??
Stop in – you won’t be sorry – and tell them MOMentum sent you!

The Trust for Public Land, one of our partners working on bringing exercise equipment to Bitter Lake Reservoir Park, recently made this touching video on how free, high quality exercise equipment is changing lives.
The effect of the London Summer Olympics has Londoners looking beyond the typical gym for their health and fitness needs. In fact, the city has installed over eighteen outdoor gyms in the past few yeas! The Parks and Rec Department say that there’s an “outdoor gym craze” going on and they receive numerous requests each day from residents wanting an outdoor gym in their neighborhood park. It’s been a challenge for them to find the resources to make it happen but they see the value in providing free exercise equipment and are trying their best to install the equipment in as many parks as they can.
An interesting side note — Strathclyde (a borough of London) Police organised an outdoor gym in an area rife with gang membership and have seen an 8% drop in crime. At MOMentum, we are hoping to do a similar crime-prevention study to see if more parents exercising in the park makes it a safer public space.
How else do you hypothesize outdoor gyms are impacting the community?
Here are some photos of outdoor gyms in London:
My sister has been following the “no added sugar” diet (basically, not eating anything with added refined sugars) and is loving the results – better mood, clearer skin, losing weight! It sounds amazing so I’m giving it a try. I am always in search of tasty, healthy snacks that my son and I will both eat. I made these today and they are winners.
Easy Energy Bars
In a food processor, combine 1 cup of pitted Medjool dates, 1 cup toasted almonds, 1/4 tsp. vanilla extract (make sure there is no added sugar!), 1/4 cup almond butter, and 1-3 tbls. of water.
Purée until mixture sticks together. Add more water if needed. Using your hands , press mixture into a 2 qt square baking dish and refrigerate. Once chilled, cut into 36 squares and store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to one week.
